Journey is a powerful, easy to read resource that not only brings awareness to the need but also prepares people for the journey. It should be read first by anyone thinking about caring for these special children. There is a profound spiritual dimension we must be aware of before we begin the journey. The cover picture was chosen (actual photograph) for its sensitive symbolism.
As you look at the photo notice that the parents have three children with them. The boy on the left is of African descent – an orphan perhaps from Ethiopia. The girl in the middle is Asian – perhaps an orphan from India, China or Vietnam. The boy on the right could be a fatherless child from Russia, the Ukraine or another eastern European country. He could as well be a boy from the U.S. foster care system.
The parents have been on a long and arduous journey. And now, they are climbing the last hill before they arrive at their intended destination. The journey has been hard for them at times, and as you observe the sky there are storm clouds representing difficulties and hardship. Those clouds are now moving to the right with the sun beginning to reflect upon the landscape. For those who have trusted the Lord for His provision and promise on the journey, the sun is the Son of God, Jesus Christ, emanating His brilliance on the final stretch.
A large, tall tree which has grown for generations at the crest of the hill. The parents are bringing their children from the journey to graft them permanently into their family tree which basks in the glory of the Son. It is evidence that God’s design for His love for people and that the family is His design and will continue.
Journey to the Fatherless is arranged by chapters useful for pastors, missions committees and church leaders. There is material for small groups, Sunday School classes and those pursuing caring for the least of these.
